The number of inhabitants is the total number of all inhabitants of a territorial unit (city, country, etc.). It is the central indicator for measuring demographics. Another word for number of inhabitants is population size. Changes in the number of inhabitants over time describe the development of a population. Population density, i.e. the number of inhabitants per square kilometer, is determined by the number of inhabitants and the total area of the area under consideration.
