The unemployment rate indicates what percentage of the total number of people in a country (e.g. Germany) who could be working (labor force) are currently registered as unemployed. If we add the number of people in the labor force to the number of registered unemployed, the unemployment rate tells us what percentage of the population is unemployed. The unemployment rate in relation to the total civilian labor force takes into account only the registered unemployed and not all job seekers.
The unemployment rate is an indicator of labor market and employment conditions and is part of the unemployment statistics.
